Course Description – Concert Band
The Long Reach Concert Band consists of musicians the who play a variety of literature, with an emphasis placed on building a foundation of individual and ensemble performance skills. The band may participate in concerts and performance assessments. After school activities and practices are integral to the course, and grades may reflect such participation. The number of required non-school hour performances and practices during a school year may not exceed 25. Previous band experience or band director approval is required.
Classroom Rules
1.Be on time and prepared with all necessary materials and instruments in working order.
2.Be respectful of students, faculty, and equipment.
3.Silence is required when receiving instructions.
4.Do not be complacent!
Required materials:
Instruments: It is the responsibility of the student to keep instruments in good working order. School instruments will be signed out to students as needed. Damage to school instruments due to negligence will be repaired at the student’s/parents’ expense. If an instrument is not in good working order for an extended period of time it will result in a lower grade for the student.
Method Book: Students will be required to purchase a method book for use at home and in the classroom. The method book will not exceed $20 in cost.
Music: All assigned music must be kept in a band folder and written on in pencil only. Students and parents are financially responsible for replacing damaged or lost music.
Metronome/tuner: These items are necessary tools for developing musicians and can be purchased at any local music store or as a computer or phone application.
Woodwinds:Plastic reed guard or reed case
Swab
Cork grease
Rotate and play on at least 3 good reeds at a time
Brass:Valve oil
Slide grease
Soft clean cloth
Straight mute and cup mute (trumpet and trombone)
Grading Policy:
Classwork/Homework (40%)
-Student is prepared and actively engaged in the music education process both in the classroom and at home, including playing, writing, and listening activities.
-Participation in sectionals and after school rehearsals
-Practice charts as required by director
Evaluations (30%)
-Playing tests, scale check-offs, spot checks of band music, and smartmusic computerized assessments
-Written tests
-Ensemble evaluations (includes director evaluations, professional evaluations, and student self-evaluations)
Performances (30%)
-All performances are mandatory and appropriate concert attire must be worn. -Failure to follow proper concert etiquette will also result in a grade reduction.
Band Volunteers and Fundraising:
All Band members benefit from the profits of fund raising, so ALL members are expected to participate as much as possible. MUSIC DEPARTMENT TRIP –The entire music department is invited to participate in a music festival in Boston. Concert Band members are encouraged to attend and perform on the spring trip. Further information will be distributed as it becomes available.
